Every day, your devices like computers, smartphones, and even smartwatches gather data about you. This data can include everything from your preferences to your spending habits. While this might seem unsettling, you do have options to manage how your information is collected, shared, and used.
The annual Data Never Sleeps infographic reveals the data produced online every minute. It highlights the growing amount of user data generated as more people engage with digital platforms and services.
Josh James, the founder and CEO of Domo, stated that “Data drives everything we do, from a quick search online or sending an email, to checking the latest headlines on our way to work. Data Never Sleeps, now in its eleventh year, depicts just how much we rely on data and its impact on our daily lives in one of the 525,600 minutes in a year.”
While you can’t completely hide sensitive data—like your purchase history or credit card number—taking proactive measures can help you decide who sees your data. By adopting some simple habits, you can take charge of your data. Remember, your data is valuable, and you should have a say in who gets to use it!
Know the tradeoff between privacy and convenience.
When you download a new app, create an online account, or join a social media site, you often have to share sensitive information immediately. This may include details like your location, contacts, and photos.
This personally identifiable information (PII) is extremely valuable, so it’s important to consider whether the service you’re getting in return is worth the personal data you have to provide, even if it seems free.
Here are some questions to help you make smart choices about sharing your data:
- Is the app, service, or game worth the personal information they’re asking for?
- Do you have control over your data privacy while using the service?
- Is the data they want even necessary for the app or service? For example, why would a weather app need access to your contacts?
- If you haven’t used an app or service in a while, is it worth keeping, knowing that it could still be collecting and sharing your data?
Adjust privacy settings to your comfort level.
Take a moment to review the privacy and security settings for the apps and services you’re already using. You can usually find these options in the Settings section; adjusting them only takes a few minutes. We recommend opting for less data sharing to enhance your privacy.
You don’t have to change everything at once—start with one account and gradually adjust the settings for all your devices. To help you get started, try using this resource the National Cybersecurity Alliance created. It features links to update your privacy settings on popular apps and online services.
